SLUSH PUPPiE Products Recalled Over High Glycerol Levels

Several SLUSH PUPPiE syrup products have been recalled from sale across Ireland due to elevated levels of glycerol, with particular concern for young children who may experience side effects including headaches, nausea and vomiting.

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland issued a Category 1 recall notice today for multiple batches of SLUSH PUPPiE syrups manufactured in China. The products, which include both regular and zero sugar varieties, contain high levels of glycerol (E 422), a food additive used to maintain the slushy texture in frozen drinks.

The recalled products include four-pack syrup sets in popular flavours such as Blue Raspberry, Strawberry, Lemon & Lime and Cola, as well as two-pack sets and individual syrup cups with making straws. All affected batches have best before dates ranging from May 2025 to November 2026.

Glycerol is an approved food additive in the European Union and is commonly used in slush drinks as a sugar substitute. However, EU legislation requires it to be used only at levels necessary to achieve its intended purpose. There is no maximum level set for its use in flavoured drinks.

Because young children have a lower body weight, if they consume large quantities of glycerol in a short period of time, it is possible that some young children may experience side effects such as headaches, nausea and vomiting.

The recall affects products sold through retailers, wholesalers and distributors across Cork and the rest of Ireland. Retailers have been instructed to remove the implicated batches from sale and display recall notices at point of sale. Wholesalers and distributors have been asked to contact affected customers and provide recall notices.

Consumers are advised not to consume the implicated batches. Those who have purchased any of the affected products can return them to their point of purchase.

The recall applies to five specific product variations, with multiple batch codes listed for some items. Full details of batch codes and best before dates are available in the official recall notice.
