Second Driver Arrested After Attempting to Assist Friend in Kanturk Drug-Driving Operation

An Garda Síochána’s Christmas Road Safety campaign took an unexpected turn in Kanturk this evening, after two motorists were arrested on suspicion of drug-driving within minutes of each other.

Gardaí from the Cork County Roads Policing Unit, supported by the Road Safety Authority, were carrying out a roadside operation as part of ongoing seasonal enforcement. During the checkpoint, one driver was arrested after testing positive for cannabis.

A short time later, another motorist arrived to assist his friend. However, Gardaí say this so-called “knight in shining armour” soon found himself in trouble of his own. He was arrested on suspicion of drug-driving after testing positive for cannabis, cocaine, opiates, benzodiazepines, amphetamine and methamphetamine.

Gardaí described the situation as “unusual, to say the least,” while reiterating the dangers posed by drug-driving and the real-world consequences it carries.

A spokesperson for the Roads Policing Unit said the message remains simple:
“Drug-driving is not just illegal, it’s life-threatening. Even small amounts can impair reaction times and coordination. Never drive under the influence.”

This operation forms part of a wider Christmas enforcement campaign across Cork and Munster, focused on reducing collisions and keeping roads safe during one of the busiest times of the year.
