The Road Safety Authority has launched nominations for its prestigious Leading Lights in Road Safety Awards 2025, calling on communities to recognise individuals and groups making a difference on Irish roads.

Now in its sixteenth year, the awards programme seeks to honour those promoting road safety through education, campaigning, and innovative community initiatives. Nominations are open until 24 October 2025, with the ceremony taking place at Croke Park on 10 December 2025.

The awards have introduced refreshed categories for 2025, including the Vulnerable Road User Safety Award, Employer-led Road Safety Programme Award, and Youth Road Safety Champion Award. Additional categories cover school initiatives, innovation and research, approved driving instructors, and the Gay Byrne Media Award.

Winners from each category will be eligible for the coveted Gertie Shields Supreme Award 2025, named after the inspirational road safety activist who passed away in 2015 after winning the supreme honour in 2013.

Sam Waide, CEO of the RSA, said:

"It's very important that we recognise all the incredible work that goes on in communities throughout Ireland to promote the importance of safety on our roads. We are always amazed by the calibre of nominations we receive for the Leading Lights in Road Safety awards. Every day, up and down the country, schools, journalists, businesses, volunteers, and community groups are running brilliant initiatives. We encourage you to nominate these individuals and groups who are promoting road safety, and we look forward to celebrating their efforts at this year's awards in Croke Park in December."

Méabh White, a road safety advocate and previous Gertie Shields Supreme Award recipient, added:

"The Leading Lights in Road Safety Awards are back with refreshed categories this year. As somebody who almost died on the roads as a child, these awards play a special role in my heart. It's so incredibly important to celebrate the important work being done in the community to broaden the conversation on road safety. I would encourage you to nominate the leading lights in road safety in your local area before 24th October."

For Cork communities, the awards present an opportunity to recognise local road safety champions. Community-driven initiatives like safety awareness campaigns, school education programmes, or volunteer groups monitoring dangerous road conditions could all be eligible for recognition.

The RSA emphasises that road safety improvements require collaboration between organisations, government agencies, communities, and individuals. The awards highlight vital community work aimed at reducing road deaths and preventing serious injuries.

Nomination details and application forms are available on the RSA website. The deadline for submissions is 24 October 2025, with winners announced at the Croke Park ceremony in December.
