Parnell Bridge spans the River Lee beside Cork City Hall, connecting the city centre with the south side of the city.Parnell Bridge is a key road bridge spanning the River Lee in Cork City, connecting the city centre with the south side. The current structure was officially opened in May 1971, replacing an earlier swing bridge, and was last substantially refurbished between 2019 and 2020.
The quarter-of-a-million pound structure was officially opened on May 24, 1971, by the then Lord Mayor of Cork, Peter Barry. Significant restoration works to the beloved structure took place between 2019 and 2020 when it was refurbished, repainted and given a new lease of life.
The railings works are separate from the nearby Morrison's Island Public Realm and Flood Defence Scheme, where a new Parnell Plaza at the junction of South Mall and Parnell Bridge has recently opened to the public.Parnell Plaza, located at the junction of South Mall and Parnell Bridge, is now open for everyone to enjoy riverside views in the upgraded public realm, and is part of the ongoing Morrison's Island Public Realm and Flood Defence Scheme.
