Lifeguards at Owenahincha Beach raised the red flag shortly after 13:30 this afternoon following the confirmed presence of Portuguese Man O’ War.

As of this evening, the warning remains in place, with Cork County Council Beachguards advising that the beach is unsuitable for swimming or any aquatic activities.

The red flag indicates no swimming is permitted, and beach users are urged to follow lifeguard instructions until the advisory is lifted.

The Portuguese Man O’ War, while often mistaken for a jellyfish, is a siphonophore whose sting can cause severe pain and, in some cases, more serious reactions. Contact should be strictly avoided.

Cork County Council Beachguards said earlier:

“Owenahincha beach changed to Red Flag due to presence of Portuguese Man O’ War. Lifeguards advise NO SWIMMING on Owenahincha beach. Unsuitable for aquatic activities.”
