Progress Update on M28 Cork to Ringaskiddy
M28 Cork to Ringaskiddy work progresses well with controlled blasting underway and major traffic changes starting in two weeks. Relief road nearing completion.

Construction work on the M28 Cork to Ringaskiddy motorway is advancing well across multiple locations, with controlled blasting now underway near Shannon Park Roundabout and significant traffic management measures set to begin within a fortnight.
The ambitious infrastructure project has reached several key milestones this month. At Shannonpark, major earthworks cutting continues alongside embankment filling to the north, with topsoiling of the new embankments scheduled to commence in the coming weeks. Meanwhile, embankment filling has begun on the east side of the existing road at the new Shanbally Interchange.
Site clearance operations are progressing at three critical locations: Carr's Hill, Maryborough Hill, and Rochestown. New culverts are simultaneously under construction at both Shannonpark and Carr's Hill, preparing the ground for upcoming stream diversion works.
Road users should prepare for significant traffic management changes. The northbound hard shoulder between Carr's Hill and Maryborough Bridge will close in approximately two weeks, remaining shut for roughly six months whilst construction work continues.
Night Works and Traffic Monitoring
Investigative works on the existing N28 structure over Rochestown Road will take place during night hours under localised traffic management. These operations are designed to minimise impact on daily commuters.
Installation of live traffic streaming cameras will soon begin across the entire scheme, running from Rochestown to Ringaskiddy. The camera network will operate under localised traffic management measures to reduce disruption for motorists.
Material imports to the Shanbally Interchange continue via lorry movements along the N28 from the R613 in Ringaskiddy, with vehicles turning left before Shanbally roundabout.
Controlled Blasting Operations
Rock excavation through controlled blasting has commenced in the cutting area north of Shannon Park Roundabout. The next scheduled blast will take place on 25th September 2025.
Local communities will receive advance notice of specific dates, locations, and timing for all blasting operations, including details of warning signals and protective measures. All blasting work will comply with statutory requirements and relevant codes of practice, managed to prevent adverse impacts on the public, property, or environment.
Ringaskiddy Relief Road Developments
The Ringaskiddy Relief Road project continues alongside the main M28 works. Finishing works at Ringaskiddy Roundabout are nearing completion, whilst crash barrier installation has begun through the main cut between Ringaskiddy Roundabout and Loughbeg.
Traffic management on Loughbeg Road remains in place with a stop-go system operating to facilitate construction of the realigned carriageway.
The pedestrian underpass on Old Post Office Road has reached substantial completion for its structural elements. However, it will remain closed to the public until mid-December to allow completion of road works in the surrounding area.
At the new Barnahely Roundabout, traffic management continues on the R613 to enable construction of the roundabout and its approach lanes. Works include installation of services and drainage, carried out in phases to complete the roundabout safely whilst minimising disruption.
