No Fatalities Recorded in First Three Days of May Bank Holiday Roads Policing Operation
Gardaí report no road fatalities in first three days of May Bank Holiday policing operation; 77 arrested for drink or drug driving, 1,700+ caught speeding.
An Garda Síochána has confirmed that no fatalities were recorded on Irish roads during the first three days of the May Bank Holiday Roads Policing Operation, which began at 7:00am on Thursday 30 April 2026.
The operation runs until 7:00am on Tuesday 5 May 2026, with every on-duty Garda member conducting road traffic enforcement activity throughout the weekend. The total number of fatalities on Irish roads so far this year stands at 55.
In the first three days of the operation, in excess of 1,700 drivers were detected for speeding offences. A total of 77 people were arrested for driving under the influence of an intoxicant, including alcohol and drugs. In excess of 200 drivers were also detected for holding a mobile phone or not wearing a seatbelt.
Notable speeds recorded on Saturday 2 May 2026 included 80 km/h in a 50 km/h zone on the R183, Dernaglug, Doohamlet, Monaghan; 97 km/h in a 60 km/h zone on the N52, Barfordstown, Kells, Meath; 105 km/h in an 80 km/h zone on the N2, Carrigans, Emyvale, Monaghan; and 139 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on the N72, Knockanimrish, Killarney, Kerry.
Gardaí are conducting both statutory Mandatory Intoxicant Testing (MIT) checkpoints and regular high-visibility policing throughout the weekend. An Garda Síochána and the Road Safety Authority (RSA) are urging all road users to support efforts to keep themselves and others safe.
Motorists are reminded to always drive within the speed limit, wear a seatbelt, and never use a mobile phone while driving. Gardaí are also urging drivers to keep distractions out of the vehicle and to take extra caution around vulnerable road users, in particular pedestrians and cyclists.
Walking or cycling under the influence of alcohol or drugs can also put road users at risk. Cyclists and pedestrians are advised to remain visible and aware of their surroundings at all times.
