Night-Time Road Closures and Traffic Restrictions Planned on N20 for Abnormal Load Movement

Motorists are being advised of significant night-time traffic restrictions on the N20 this weekend as an Exceptional Abnormal Load (EAL) is transported through parts of Limerick and North Cork under Garda escort.

Cork County Council has confirmed the operation will take place over two nights to minimise disruption, with a combination of road closures, diversions and expected delays along sections of the N20.

The movement involves a large grid transformer being transported from Limerick Docks to Ballyhay, and onwards to Ballyroe Solar Farm.

Night 1: Saturday 14 February, 8pm to Sunday 15 February, 7am

On the first night, the Exceptional Abnormal Load will travel from Limerick Docks to Ballyhay, near the Lidl Distribution Centre, using the N20 corridor via Charleville.

The N20 will be closed between Croom and the Limerick–Cork boundary. Diversions will be in place via the R516, R512 and R515 through Bruff and Kilmallock for traffic travelling both northbound and southbound.

Within County Cork, the N20 from the Limerick border through Charleville to Ballyhay will remain open to local traffic. However, delays are expected as the slow-moving convoy proceeds southbound under Garda escort. The convoy is expected to pass through the Charleville area between approximately midnight and 3am.

Night 2: Sunday 15 February, 8pm to Monday 16 February, 5am

On the second night, the grid transformer will be transported from Ballyhay to Ballyroe Solar Farm.

The N20 will remain open throughout the operation, but delays are expected in the Ballyhay area between approximately 10pm and 1am as the convoy moves southbound.

The L5530 at Ballyhay will be closed during this period, with fully signposted diversion routes in place. Local access will be maintained. Additional delays are also expected on the L5529 due to the passage of the convoy.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time for journeys, comply with diversion signage, and follow instructions from Gardaí during the operation. The council has thanked the public for their cooperation as the essential transport is carried out safely.

Further updates will be issued via Cork County Council’s website and social media channels.
