Morrison's Island Roadworks Begin with Traffic Changes in Cork City Centre
Morrison's Island roadworks begin today with road closure. Father Mathew Quay now one-way westbound.
New roadworks have commenced today on Morrison's Island as part of ongoing flood defence improvements, with a road closure and traffic diversions now in place between Father Mathew Street and Catherine Street.
Cork City Council confirmed the latest phase of the Morrison's Island Public Realm & Flood Defence Scheme began on Monday, 1 December 2025. The works will affect Father Mathew Quay and Morrison's Quay between Father Mathew Street (RTΓ/Holy Trinity Church) and Catherine Street (Cork College of FET).
A road closure is now in place in the affected area. To maintain traffic flow, Father Mathew Quay from Holy Trinity Church to Parliament Bridge has reopened as one-way westbound only.
Motorists can access this section via a right turn from South Mall onto Father Mathew Street. However, no right turn is permitted from Parliament Bridge onto Father Mathew Quay.
Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout the works.
Disabled parking bays have been temporarily relocated to Morrison's Quay in front of Cork College of FET.
The scheme includes upgraded streetscapes, a new riverside walkway, a redesigned plaza at the east end of South Mall, and a redesigned Trinity Bridge.
Cork City Council thanked the public for their patience during the works.
