Heavy morning delays: Dunkettle backed up, N40 stop-start Mahon-Douglas, city centre delays. N25 east clearest route.

Morning Rush Hour Brings Heavy Delays Across Cork
  • Cork commuters face significant congestion this Monday morning, with a collision on the N71 adding to typical rush hour pressures across the city and county.

A collision has been reported on the N71 Bandon Road near O'Brien's Amber Garage, with motorists advised to take extra care on approach. This incident is compounding already heavy morning traffic in the area.

The Dunkettle Interchange remains the main pressure point at 07:45 GMT, with red queues building on the M8 southbound from Silversprings and the N25 westbound approaching the junction. These delays are typical for Monday morning but remain challenging for commuters.

The N40 South Ring Road is experiencing stop-start conditions, particularly from Mahon towards Douglas and around the Kinsale Road area. Traffic west of Wilton is moving somewhat better, though speeds remain well below normal throughout the orbital route.

City centre routes are heavily congested with red segments visible on key bridges and inbound corridors. The Mallow Road and Lower Glanmire Road approaches are particularly slow, with traffic crawling through the morning rush.

The N28 towards Ringaskiddy shows slow-moving traffic from Harbour Heights, with intermittent red and yellow sections near Carr's Hill causing frustration for port workers and commuters. Meanwhile, the N27 to Cork Airport is experiencing patchy conditions around the Kinsale Road interchange and Airport Business Park.

For those heading out of the city, conditions are marginally better. The N22 towards Ballincollig shows mostly green with only brief amber sections near Ovens, whilst the N25 east of Little Island towards Carrigtwohill and Midleton remains largely free-flowing, offering one of the few clear routes this morning.

The Jack Lynch Tunnel is operating but with reduced speeds in both directions due to the volume of traffic feeding from multiple congested approach roads.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time for journeys this morning, particularly with the N71 collision likely to cause knock-on delays throughout the southern approaches to the city.
