Moderate Pollen Levels Expected Across Cork This Week

Hay fever sufferers in Cork should prepare for moderate pollen levels over the coming days, with grass, nettle and weed pollen expected to remain at medium concentrations through Friday, according to Met Éireann's latest forecast.

The warm but humid conditions forecast for Wednesday 30 July through Friday 1 August will create ideal conditions for pollen dispersal across Munster and all Irish regions. The national weather service reports that moderate levels are expected consistently throughout this three-day period.

Grass pollen, one of the most common triggers for hay fever symptoms in Ireland, will maintain medium concentrations during this period. Those sensitive to grass pollen should consider taking preventative measures, particularly during outdoor activities or when windows are open at home.

Tree pollen levels remain relatively low, with Cypress and Birch being the primary contributors. Pine, Poplar and Yew pollen are also present but at minimal levels that shouldn't cause significant issues for most people.

Nettle and weed pollen will also reach medium levels, adding to the overall pollen load in the atmosphere. This combination of different pollen types can be particularly challenging for those with multiple sensitivities.

The humid conditions will also support moderate levels of fungal spores, including Cladosporium and Alternaria on drier days, with Ascospores and Basidiospores more prevalent during periods of higher humidity.

Dr David O'Connor from DCU's School of Chemical Sciences, who provides the pollen monitoring data, notes that the consistent moderate levels across all provinces indicate widespread conditions affecting the entire country.

For Cork residents planning outdoor activities, early morning and evening tend to have lower pollen counts. Keeping windows closed during peak afternoon hours and using air purifiers indoors can help reduce exposure.

The forecast shows no variation between regions, with Leinster, Munster, Connacht and Ulster all experiencing identical moderate conditions throughout the three-day period.

Those who suffer from hay fever symptoms such as sneezing, itchy eyes, and runny nose should ensure they have adequate supplies of antihistamines or other prescribed medications. Wearing wraparound sunglasses and applying petroleum jelly around the nostrils can also help trap pollen before it enters the airways.

With the Cork summer in full swing and many outdoor events planned, being prepared for these moderate pollen levels will help residents enjoy the weather while managing their symptoms effectively.
