Minister Foley Announces Funding for Cork Playground Upgrades

Two Cork playgrounds are set to benefit from a government funding scheme after Minister for Children, Disability and Equality Norma Foley announced the recipients of this year's Capital Grant Scheme for Play and Recreation.

A total of €600,000 has been awarded to 30 local authorities across the country, with Cork City Council and Cork County Council each securing funding for upgrade works.

Pophams Park in Farranree has been allocated €18,578 under the scheme, while Carrigtwohill Playground will receive €20,516 for refurbishment works.

The scheme, which has been running since 2013, supports local authorities in improving access to quality play and recreation facilities. Funding of up to €22,000 is available per project, with local authorities required to provide matched funding of at least 25% of the departmental contribution.

Many of this year's funded projects have a particular focus on inclusion and accessibility, with planned works including the installation of wheelchair-accessible seesaws, inclusive sensory playground equipment, and level access play equipment.

Announcing the funding, Minister Foley said:

"I am delighted to announce this year's Capital Grants for Play and Recreation, which will provide vital support for communities in developing vibrant, inclusive, and accessible spaces for children and young people. These investments reflect our strong commitment to ensuring that every child has the opportunity to play, explore, and thrive in safe and inspiring environments.

We look forward to working closely with each local authority to deliver these projects that will enhance wellbeing, promote active lifestyles, and strengthen community connections across the country."
