Minister for Children, Disability and Equality, Norma Foley, has announced €500,000 in funding for 28 playgrounds and play areas throughout Ireland.

The Capital Grant Scheme for Play and Recreation will see new playgrounds developed and existing facilities upgraded, with a particular focus on inclusion and accessibility for children with diverse needs.

"I am delighted to announce this capital funding that will directly benefit families and children in every corner of Ireland," said Minister Foley. "These grants will enable city and county councils to create and upgrade playgrounds, making them more accessible, inclusive and enjoyable for everyone."

Projects receiving funding include wheelchair-accessible seesaws, inclusive sensory playground equipment, and upgraded accessibility features to ensure all children can enjoy the facilities alongside their peers.

Each project can receive a maximum of €20,000, with local authorities required to provide matching funding of at least 25 per cent of the total cost. Councils were also obligated to consult with local children and young people to qualify for the grants.

Among the successful projects are a new playground in Scotstown, County Monaghan; inclusive sensory playground equipment in Doorly, Sligo; and playground upgrades with inclusive equipment in Carrick-on-Suir, Tipperary.

The Play and Recreation Capital Funding Scheme was introduced in 2013 and supports the refurbishment of existing facilities, incorporation of natural play elements, and development of new play facilities. Applications were evaluated based on criteria including added value to young people, accessibility, inclusivity, and consultation with local children.

Ireland currently has approximately 960 playgrounds across 31 councils, with this latest funding aiming to further improve play facilities for children nationwide.

"I want to take this opportunity to extend my thanks to the local authorities for their applications and I look forward to seeing the benefits these projects will provide to local communities for many years to come," Minister Foley added.
