A Status Yellow wind warning is in effect for Cork from this afternoon, with Met Éireann advising residents to prepare for very windy conditions and strong gales near coastal areas.
The national weather service issued the warning on Saturday, updating it this morning at 07:08. The alert covers Cork, Clare, Donegal, Galway, Kerry, Leitrim, Mayo, Sligo, Waterford, Wexford, and Wicklow.
Met Éireann forecasts very windy conditions with strong and gusty south to southwest winds developing from 14:00 today. Gales or strong gales are expected near coastal areas, with the warning remaining in place until 22:00 this evening.
The weather service has identified several potential impacts for affected areas. Wave overtopping may occur along coastal regions, whilst loose objects could be displaced by strong gusts. Some fallen trees and branches are possible, and difficult travelling conditions are expected across the warning area.
Residents in Cork and other affected counties are advised to secure loose outdoor items and exercise caution when travelling, particularly in exposed areas and near the coast. The warning period coincides with Sunday afternoon and evening travel for many residents returning from weekend activities.
Those planning journeys across Cork or to neighbouring counties should monitor conditions and allow extra time for travel. Coastal communities should remain vigilant for wave overtopping, particularly during high tide periods.
The warning expires at 22:00 tonight.
