Senior marine officials and scientists met aboard Ireland's newest research vessel in Cork this morning to mark European Maritime Day 2025 and discuss sustainable ocean governance.

The high-level networking event took place on the RV Tom Crean, hosted by the Marine Institute in the Port of Cork. Attendees included European Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans Costas Kadis, Minister of State Timmy Dooley, and Lord Mayor of Cork Councillor Dan Boyle.

Dr Rick Officer, CEO of the Marine Institute, welcomed policymakers, marine scientists and industry stakeholders to the vessel for discussions on shared marine challenges facing Europe.

The gathering highlighted the importance of international collaboration in advancing sustainable ocean governance, with participants exploring ways to address common maritime issues through coordinated European efforts.

The RV Tom Crean, Ireland's newest national research vessel, provided a fitting backdrop for the maritime-focused discussions as part of the wider European Maritime Day celebrations.
