Man Arrested Following Burglary At Carrigaline Commercial Premises

A man in his 30s has been arrested after a burglary at a commercial premises on Main Street, Carrigaline, Co Cork, which occurred shortly before 8:00pm on Saturday, 29 August 2026, Gardaí have confirmed.

In a statement issued to Cork Safety Alerts, the Garda Press Office said gardaí attended a burglary at a commercial premises at Main Street, Carrigaline, which occurred shortly before 8:00pm on 29th August. A man, aged in his 30s, was arrested at the scene and is currently detained at a Garda station in the Southern region under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984. Gardaí say investigations are ongoing.

The confirmation follows a report circulating on social media on Saturday evening from All About Cork with Paul Byrne, describing an incident at a supermarket in Carrigaline.

"A Garda investigation is underway following a terrifying incident at a supermarket in Cork during which a security guard was assaulted at around 7.30 this evening Saturday."

According to Byrne's account, the man entered SuperValu in Carrigaline and punched a member of the security staff before locking himself inside a safe or vault, leaving staff unable to access him for almost an hour. Byrne reported that when the safe was eventually opened, Gardaí used pepper spray to subdue the man, who was then restrained and taken into custody. He said the incident caused considerable alarm at the supermarket, and that Gardaí were continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding it.

It has not been confirmed by Gardaí whether their statement relates to the same incident described in Byrne's report. The Garda Press Office statement does not name the premises involved or reference an assault, a supermarket, or the use of pepper spray. Byrne's account has not been independently verified by Cork Safety Alerts and remains a single source at this stage.
