Major Water Main Replacement Works to Improve Mitchelstown Supply
Essential infrastructure upgrade in Loughananna, Limerick will strengthen water network for Cork town's residents starting this Sunday.

Uisce Éireann will begin replacing over 1.7km of aging cast iron water mains next week in a project aimed at improving water services for customers in Mitchelstown, Cork. The works, starting this Sunday, 1 September, will take place along the L-86721 in Loughananna, County Limerick, where the network supplies the north Cork town.
The replacement project forms part of Uisce Éireann's National Leakage Reduction Programme, targeting pipes that are prone to frequent bursts. Ward and Burke Construction Ltd will carry out the works on behalf of Uisce Éireann, with completion expected in October 2025.
Jack Cronin, Programme Manager for Uisce Éireann's National Leakage Reduction, said:
"As part of our commitment to delivering a secure and reliable water supply, we are replacing ageing mains in Loughananna, Co. Limerick and while the temporary impact is local, this work is crucial to improving water services for customers in Mitchelstown where the network depends on this connection."
A road closure will be in effect from 1 September to 26 September 2025 on the L-86721 in Loughananna. Local and emergency traffic will be maintained at all times, with traffic management including road narrows during the works period.
Residents should note that some short-term water supply interruptions may be necessary. Uisce Éireann has committed to providing customers with a minimum of 48 hours' notice before any planned water interruptions occur.
The infrastructure upgrade is expected to significantly reduce burst incidents, eliminate existing leaks and reduce the loss of clean drinking water in the network supplying Mitchelstown.
