Major Water Infrastructure Upgrade Completed in Mallow

Uisce Éireann has completed a €1.9 million project to replace over one kilometre of water mains in Fair Street, Mallow, delivering improved water reliability and capacity to support the potential development of 130 new homes in the North Cork town.

The infrastructure upgrade, which saw the installation of new larger, modern pipes, will address ongoing issues with bursts and leakage while supporting future growth in the market town known as "the crossroads of Munster".

James Browne T.D., Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, welcomed the completion of the works yesterday.

"The completion of this €1.9 million upgrade project is very welcome news for the community. Investment in water infrastructure that provides additional capacity brings tangible benefits to towns such as Mallow by supporting the delivery of new homes and local growth," the Minister said.

He highlighted that Budget 2026 will see Uisce Éireann's funding increase by almost €500 million, which he said "will accelerate the delivery of water infrastructure and support the development of new homes across the country".

Donal O'Connor, Programme Manager with Uisce Éireann, said the utility was delighted to deliver the project for the Mallow community.

"We are delighted to have completed this project which will deliver a more reliable water supply and a more resilient water network, in addition to, providing additional capacity to support future development enabling Mallow to continue to thrive as a market town at 'the crossroads of Munster'," he said.

Mr O'Connor thanked the local community, businesses and elected representatives for their support during the works, acknowledging that "replacing old watermains in a busy town like Mallow is not an easy task".

The works on L-1207 Fair Street were carried out in two phases by Ward and Burke Construction Ltd on behalf of Uisce Éireann. Road closures were scheduled during the summer months to minimise disruption to local schools.

Weather permitting, final cold milling reinstatement and line marking are due to be completed before the end of this month.
