Major Warehouse Fire Brought Under Control After Overnight Battle in Little Island

Multiple fire brigades worked throughout last night to contain a large warehouse fire at Independent Express Cargo in Ballytrasna, Little Island, bringing the blaze under control in the early hours of this morning.

Cobh Fire Brigade and Cork City Fire Brigade were mobilised by the Munster Regional Control Centre at approximately 23:00 on Sunday night following reports of a truck fire at the logistics warehouse in Little Island. A large plume of smoke was visible as crews approached the scene, prompting an immediate request for additional resources.

On arrival, firefighters found the building well alight with flames penetrating through the roof in the eastern section of the warehouse. The building's contents provided a substantial fuel load, comprising numerous rigid and articulated trucks loaded with timber, coal, brickettes and other materials ready for delivery.

The scale of the incident required a significant multi-station response. Fire crews from Midleton Fire Station responded to support the operation, whilst Aerial Platforms and Water Tankers were deployed from Midleton, Cork City, Mallow and Bandon Fire Stations due to the fire's size and available water supply requirements. Cork County Fire Service's Incident Command Unit attended from Carrigaline Fire Station to coordinate the large-scale response.

Fire crews battled the blaze throughout the night, bringing it under control at approximately 02:30 this morning. Despite difficult circumstances, all brigades worked together effectively to prevent the fire spreading to two neighbouring buildings.

Midleton and Cobh Fire Brigades remained at the scene throughout the night before being relieved by Youghal Fire Brigade this morning. The incident remains ongoing but is under control, with damping down operations continuing.

The cause of the fire is not yet known. Firewater runoff from the firefighting operation was contained on site, and a specialist environmental company has been called in to manage this aspect of the incident.
