Major Train Delays Hit Cork-Dublin Route After Ballybrophy Breakdown

Passengers travelling between Cork and Dublin face delays of up to two hours this afternoon after a train failure at Ballybrophy station, with Iarnród Éireann crews currently working to resolve the issue.

The breakdown, which initially caused 90-minute delays, has now escalated to affect services for up to 120 minutes on both the Heuston to Cork and Heuston to Limerick routes. The incident occurred at Ballybrophy station in County Laois, on the Dublin-Cork mainline.

Iarnród Éireann spokesperson stated:

"Delays up to 120 mins to Heuston/Cork and Heuston/Limerick services can be expected due to train failure at Ballybrophy. Crews working to rectify."

The rail operator first announced 90-minute delays approximately an hour ago before updating passengers with the extended disruption timeframe. Technical crews are currently on site attempting to resolve the mechanical failure.

Passengers planning to travel on affected routes this evening are advised to check with Iarnród Éireann for the latest updates before beginning their journey. The company has indicated that further updates will follow as the situation develops.

This disruption comes during the busy Friday afternoon travel period when many commuters and weekend travellers use the service between Cork and the capital.
