Major Roadworks Progress on M28 Cork Motorway Project as Speed Limits Reduced

Construction work on the M28 Cork to Ringaskiddy motorway project is advancing well, with earthworks, stream diversions and traffic monitoring installations underway across multiple locations, BAM has confirmed.

Earthworks are continuing at Shannonpark, with filling operations extending east and west of the area. Three culverts are currently under construction as part of stream diversion works, whilst earthworks have begun along the westbound verge between Carr's Hill and Maryborough Bridge. Excavation for the new link road is scheduled to commence shortly.

Favourable weather conditions have allowed topsoiling work on embankments south of Carr's Hill to progress ahead of schedule. A watermain diversion north of Shannonpark remains underway, with Irish Water provisionally scheduled to connect into the existing network during the upcoming school midterm break.

Installation of live traffic monitoring cameras along the N28 between Rochestown and Ringaskiddy Village is currently in progress. These works will be carried out under localised traffic management, including stop/go arrangements at Shanbally Roundabout.

A significant speed limit reduction from 100km/h to 60km/h on the N28 between Rochestown Bridge and Carr's Hill came into effect on 15th October 2025 and will remain in force until 15th October 2026. Road users are advised to drive with care through this area.

The northbound hard shoulder of the N28, between Carr's Hill and Maryborough Road Bridge, will close from 3rd November for six months to facilitate construction of the link road. Traffic management will also be in place on the R855 Douglas to Carrigaline Road, with flagmen present during daytime working hours to facilitate plant crossing.

Structure investigation works will begin on Donnybrook underbridge on the Douglas to Carrigaline Road from 20th October for one week. Lane restrictions will be in place for this duration.

Controlled rock blasting continues north of the Shannon Park Roundabout, with blasts now planned twice weekly. Advance notice is provided to all relevant stakeholders, with all works carried out in line with statutory requirements and best practice.

As part of efforts to minimise construction impacts, temporary noise barriers are being installed at key sensitive locations identified in the scheme's Environmental Impact Statement. A four metre high barrier is currently being constructed beside St Patrick's Church in Rochestown.

Ringaskiddy Relief Road progress

Installation of crash barriers is substantially complete on the mainline between Ringaskiddy Roundabout and Loughbeg Road, with fencing works nearing completion at Ringaskiddy Roundabout.

Lane restrictions remain in place on Loughbeg Road, with surfacing works due to commence next week on the new alignment. Following completion of these works, traffic will switch onto the new alignment on 28th October, though lane restrictions will remain to facilitate the connection to Ringport Business Park. Two-way traffic is scheduled to be restored during the week commencing 10th November.

On Old Post Office Road, drainage, street lighting, kerbing and footpath works are well progressed, with preparation works ongoing for the final surfacing of the underpass, footpaths and approaches. The works are on schedule to be completed by the beginning of December.

At Barnahely Roundabout, R613 traffic has been switched onto the northbound lane of the new alignment, with a one-way system continuing. Works are concentrated on the southbound lane, with drainage, street lighting, kerbing, service diversion and footpath works ongoing. Current traffic management restrictions will remain in place for another three weeks, after which the roundabout and approaches will open to two-way traffic.
