Major Night-Time Closures Planned for Kinsale Road Roundabout Throughout August
Kinsale Road Roundabout closes nightly 20:30-05:30 from 5-29 Aug for resurfacing. Check diversions before travelling.

Cork motorists face significant disruption at the Kinsale Road Roundabout as extensive resurfacing works requiring night-time closures are announced from 5 August to 29 August 2025. The phased closures, running from 20:30 to 05:30 each night, will affect multiple access points to one of the city's busiest junctions.
The works will be carried out by Egis Lagan on behalf of Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) in two overlapping phases to resurface the roundabout and its approach roads. Phase one begins on Tuesday, 5 August and continues until Friday, 15 August, with major restrictions affecting eastbound N40 traffic and several roundabout exits.
During the initial phase, the eastbound N40 slip road onto the roundabout will be completely closed. Motorists travelling from the west will need to exit at Togher and follow a diversion route via Tramore Road. The Kinsale Road (L2548) and N27 South Link Road exits from the roundabout will also be closed, along with access from Kinsale Road onto the roundabout.
Westbound N40 traffic will maintain access to the roundabout, but vehicles will be unable to travel straight through. Instead, they'll be directed to either Frankfield Road or the N27 Kinsale Road, where alternative routes will be signposted.
The second phase begins on Thursday, 14 August and extends until Friday, 29 August, focusing on the southern sections of the junction. This will see closures of the westbound N40 slip road, Frankfield Road access and exit lanes, and the N27 Kinsale Road exit lane.
Comprehensive diversion routes will be in place throughout both phases to accommodate traffic from all directions. The works programme includes milling, pavement laying, new road markings, ironworks maintenance, and recutting of traffic signal loops.
Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times during the works, ensuring local residents and businesses remain accessible on foot. The contractor has scheduled the works during night-time hours to minimise disruption to the heavy daytime traffic that uses this critical junction.
The Kinsale Road Roundabout serves as a vital interchange between the N40 South Ring Road, the N27 to Cork Airport and Kinsale, and local routes to Togher and Frankfield. The junction handles thousands of vehicles daily, making these improvement works essential for maintaining road safety and traffic flow.
Motorists planning to use the junction during August are strongly advised to check specific closure dates and plan alternative routes. The overlapping period from 14 to 15 August will see the most extensive restrictions, with closures affecting multiple approaches to the roundabout.
The resurfacing project forms part of TII's ongoing road maintenance programme for national routes. The new surface will improve driving conditions and extend the lifespan of this heavily trafficked junction, though drivers should expect some delays even with diversions in place.
Regular updates on the progress of works and any changes to the closure schedule will be available through official channels. Motorists are encouraged to allow extra time for journeys and to follow all diversion signage during the closure periods.
