Macroom Buffalo Buffaloumi Recalled Over Listeria Contamination

A batch of locally produced Macroom Buffalo Buffaloumi cheese has been recalled from sale today due to the presence of Listeria monocytogenes, a bacterium that can cause serious illness in vulnerable people. Consumers who have purchased the affected 180g packs are advised not to eat the product.

The recall affects batch code 3107 with a use by date of 20 January 2026. The cheese, produced in County Cork, is being withdrawn from shops across Ireland, with recall notices being displayed at points of sale.

Listeria monocytogenes can cause symptoms ranging from mild flu-like illness to gastrointestinal problems including nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. In rare cases, the infection can lead to serious complications, particularly in pregnant women, babies, elderly people and those with weakened immune systems.

The incubation period for listeria infection averages three weeks but can range from three to 70 days, meaning symptoms may not appear immediately after consuming contaminated food.

Retailers across Cork and Ireland have been instructed to remove the implicated batch from sale immediately and display recall notices where the product was sold. Wholesalers and distributors must contact affected customers to ensure the product is withdrawn from the supply chain.

Consumers who have purchased Macroom Buffalo Buffaloumi with batch code 3107 should not consume the product under any circumstances. The recall is classified as Category 1: For Action, indicating it requires immediate attention from both retailers and consumers.

This is the latest in a series of food safety alerts issued by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland, which monitors products for potential contamination risks. Anyone who has consumed the affected product and experiences symptoms should contact their GP, particularly if they fall into a vulnerable category.

The recall demonstrates the importance of checking batch codes and use by dates on food products, even those from trusted local producers.
