Macroom Boil Water Notice Lifted After Two Weeks

Macroom residents can finally put the kettle away and get back to normal after two weeks of boiling water for drinking and cooking.

Macroom Boil Water Notice Lifted After Two Weeks

Residents across Macroom can once again drink tap water without boiling after Uisce Éireann lifted the Boil Water Notice affecting nearly 5,000 customers this morning.

The notice, which protected approximately 4,697 customers for the past two weeks, was removed with immediate effect today following consultation with the Health Service Executive. Normal water use can now resume across the Macroom public water supply.

The precautionary measure was introduced on 12 September following operational issues at Macroom Water Treatment Plant. Drinking water experts worked round the clock to resolve the problems, with satisfactory sampling results finally allowing the all-clear to be given.

Niall O'Riordan, Operations Manager at Uisce Éireann, expressed gratitude to the local community: "Uisce Éireann's primary focus remains the protection of public health and we worked with our stakeholders to thankfully lift the notice in a very timely manner."

However, residents shouldn't expect this to be the last disruption. The Macroom supply remains at high risk of requiring further boil water notices until major upgrade works are completed. The town has experienced frequent water quality issues over recent years, a problem that has become all too familiar for local families and businesses.

Relief is on the horizon through a substantial €6.5 million investment to completely overhaul the treatment plant. The comprehensive upgrade, being carried out by Glanua on behalf of Uisce Éireann, aims to address the underlying causes of Macroom's persistent water quality challenges.

The ambitious project is expected to reach completion in summer 2026, promising a more secure and reliable water supply for the community. Once finished, the upgraded facility should significantly reduce the frequency of boil water notices that have disrupted daily life in the market town.

During any future boil water notices, residents are reminded that tap water remains safe to consume once properly boiled. Uisce Éireann maintains strict drinking water standards in line with EU regulations, including wide safety margins to protect public health.

The utility company operates enhanced testing and monitoring programmes, consulting with the HSE whenever risks are identified. Swift action is always taken to address issues and lift notices as quickly as safety permits.

Customers can stay informed about water supply issues through multiple channels, including the Uisce Éireann website, social media accounts @IWCare and @IrishWater, and the 24/7 customer care helpline on 1800 278 278. A free text alert service is also available at water.ie, where residents can register using their Eircode and mobile number for real-time local updates.
