Macroom Boil Water Notice Lifted After Two Weeks

The Boil Water Notice affecting approximately 4,697 customers in Macroom has been lifted with immediate effect following satisfactory water sampling results, bringing relief to the West Cork town after two weeks of disruption.

The notice, which was issued on 18 July 2025, was put in place to protect public health following elevated turbidity levels and operational issues at Macroom Water Treatment Plant. Uisce Éireann confirmed that customers can now resume normal use of the public water supply after consultation with the Health Service Executive (HSE).

Drinking water experts from Uisce Éireann worked to resolve the issues as quickly as possible, with water quality now meeting the required safety standards. The lifting of the notice comes as welcome news for residents and businesses who have endured repeated water quality issues in recent years.

Niall O'Riordan, Operations Manager at Uisce Éireann:

"Uisce Éireann's primary focus remains the protection of public health and we worked with our stakeholders to lift the notice as quickly as possible. We are grateful to customers, elected representatives, and the media for their assistance in sharing information on the Boil Water Notice."

The water utility is progressing with a €6.5 million upgrade of the water treatment plant, which aims to address the long-standing issues that have plagued Macroom's water supply. The works, being carried out by contractor Glanua, are expected to be completed by summer 2026.

However, Uisce Éireann has warned that the Macroom public water supply remains at high risk of requiring further boil water notices until the upgrade is complete. The presence of turbidity in the raw water is largely influenced by seasonal weather changes, and the limitations of the existing treatment plant make it difficult to fully mitigate these issues.

The ongoing upgrades will provide a more secure and reliable water supply for the local community, addressing the risks to water quality that have resulted in frequent boil water notices over recent years.

Customers can stay informed about water quality issues through Uisce Éireann's website, their X channels @IWCare and @IrishWater, or by calling the 24/7 customer care helpline on 1800 278 278. The utility has also launched a free text service for real-time updates, which customers can access by registering with their Eircode and mobile number at www.water.ie.
