M8 Southbound to Close for Two Days Between Mitchelstown and Fermoy

Motorists travelling on the M8 southbound should prepare for significant disruption starting tomorrow, as Transport Infrastructure Ireland has announced a full closure of a major section between Junction 13 and Junction 14 for roadworks.

The southbound carriageway of the M8 between Mitchelstown South (Junction 13) and Fermoy (Junction 14) will be completely closed from 7am on Monday, 3 November until 7am on Wednesday, 5 November 2025. Traffic will be diverted via the R639 regional road during this period.

TII Traffic warned motorists on social media this morning:

"Roadworks ahead! M8 southbound: Between J13, Mitchelstown South and J14, Fermoy. From Mon 03/11, 07:00 to Wed 05/11, 07:00. Road closed! Traffic diverted via R639. Avoid delays, plan your journey in advance!"

The closure will affect a critical section of the main Cork to Dublin motorway, forcing all southbound traffic onto the regional road network. Drivers heading towards Cork from the midlands or Dublin should expect longer journey times and consider alternative routes or departure times where possible.

The diversion via the R639 will add extra time to journeys, particularly during morning and evening peak hours. Motorists are being urged to plan ahead and allow additional time for their trips during the two-day closure period.

Northbound traffic on the M8 will not be affected by these roadworks and will continue to operate normally throughout the closure period.
