M28 Progress Update: Ringaskiddy Relief Road Opens to Traffic
Ringaskiddy Relief Road has opened to traffic. M28 works continue, with N28 night works from 17 August and Board of Works Road closed until end September.
The Ringaskiddy Relief Road has opened to public traffic, marking a major milestone for the M28 Cork to Ringaskiddy scheme, as works continue at multiple points along the corridor, including new night-time works on the N28 and a lengthy closure of the Board of Works Road later this month.
Ringaskiddy Relief Road Opens
The new Ringaskiddy Relief Road opened to traffic last week, improving connectivity and access to Ringaskiddy. The project team has acknowledged Sorensen Civil Engineering, along with all contractors, designers, site teams and project partners involved. Thanks have also been extended to local residents, businesses and road users for their patience during construction.
Rochestown
Construction of the retaining wall along the off-ramp to Rochestown remains ongoing, with the off-ramp reduced to a single lane while works continue. Preparations are also underway for the next phase of works at a new structure, with foundation excavations due to commence on the south side of Rochestown Road in the coming weeks. These works will impact traffic travelling towards Douglas, and traffic management will be introduced on the south side of the road near the site compound from next week.
Night-Time Works on the N28
Night-time works are planned on the N28 from the week commencing 17 August 2026, as part of preparations for future traffic switches. These will include the removal of existing traffic islands, lighting columns and road markings. Night-time traffic management will operate between 8pm and 5am during this period.
Mount Oval and Edgewood
At Mount Oval, excavation works for the new slip road continue to progress, with flagmen in place during working hours to manage plant crossings. In the Edgewood area at Maryborough Hill, hoarding installation is scheduled to begin on Monday 10 August.
Maryborough Hill Temporary Bridge
A major milestone was achieved recently with the successful installation of the temporary bridge at Maryborough Hill, moved into position during the planned N28 weekend closure. Works are now focused on tying the temporary structure into the existing road network, including surfacing, safety barriers and finishing works. Once complete, traffic will transfer onto the temporary bridge, allowing demolition of the existing overbridge to begin.
Maryborough to Carr's Hill Link Road and Board of Works Road
Kerbing and surfacing works are the primary focus along the Maryborough to Carr's Hill link road. A significant closure is also approaching on the Board of Works Road, which will close from 17 August until the end of September 2026 to facilitate construction of a new overbridge and associated road network.
Carr's Hill Interchange
Traffic has now been successfully switched onto part of the newly constructed roundabout at Carr's Hill Interchange. This has enabled works to advance on the remaining sections, including earthworks, pavement construction and tie-in works, with activity continuing over the coming months as the roundabout moves towards completion.
Shannonpark
Construction of the overbridge structure and new link road remains ongoing in the Shannonpark area. Planing of the existing road surface and surfacing works on the L2473 tie-in are scheduled to begin during the week commencing 17 August 2026, alongside surfacing works on the new section of road connecting to the R611 towards Carrigaline.
Rock Road, Cogan's Lane and Shanbally
Works on the structure at Rock Road continue to progress. At Cogan's Lane, machinery crossings will continue intermittently during working hours, with flagmen or temporary traffic lights in operation. In Shanbally (Marion Terrace), construction traffic continues to use the road crossing, with excavation works for a new overbridge expected to commence shortly and foundation works scheduled to begin within the next couple of weeks.
Traffic Management Summary
Traffic management remains in place on the R855 and R609 (Carrigaline Road), both east and west of the N28, where flagmen and temporary traffic lights are controlling plant crossings and earthworks. Flagmen also continue to manage plant crossings on Ballinrea Road, with additional traffic management along the verge of the R611. In Shanbally, intermittent stop/go traffic management will remain in place to facilitate ongoing works.
Blasting Works
Rock excavation by means of controlled blasting has recommenced in an area of cutting north of the Shannonpark Roundabout.
