M28 update: works advancing at Rochestown, Mount Oval, Maryborough Hill, Shannonpark and Ringaskiddy.

M28 Cork to Ringaskiddy: Works Progress

The M28 Project Team has issued its latest progress update, confirming that construction is advancing across multiple fronts between Cork city and Ringaskiddy, with a newly launched app giving road users real-time information on works and traffic conditions.

New M28 App Now Available

The project team has launched a dedicated M28 App, now available on both the App Store and Google Play Store. Features include live traffic camera feeds along the N28 corridor, real-time traffic updates, details of upcoming scheduled works, live journey times, and push-notification alerts for incidents or accidents.

Rochestown

Retaining wall works adjacent to the N28 off-ramp are continuing in the Rochestown area, alongside road-widening operations extending from the Bloomfield junction. Investigative works beneath the existing bridge on Rochestown Road are planned for next week to inform upcoming construction activities.

Following the May Bank Holiday weekend, the off-ramp to Rochestown Road will operate with a single lane for a number of weeks to allow construction of Retaining Wall 5 to proceed. Local pedestrian diversions will be in place during daytime hours on Rochestown Road beneath the existing bridge.

Mount Oval and Maryborough Hill

Excavation works for the new Mount Oval off-ramp are currently underway. At Maryborough Hill, preparatory works are scheduled to commence over the coming weeks and will include service diversions and the removal of selected boundary walls. Stop/go arrangements and temporary traffic lights will be implemented at Maryborough Hill near the bridge towards the end of April.

Maryborough to Carr's Hill

Excavation and retaining wall construction on the west side of the N28 are ongoing along the Maryborough to Carr's Hill link road. Construction of the retaining wall on the east side of the N28 is due to commence on Monday, 20th April, with both areas expected to remain active for several months.

Board of Works Road

Excavation and construction works for the new bridge on the Board of Works Road have commenced and will continue over the coming months. Intermittent flagman-controlled crossings are in place on this road.

Shannonpark

Works on the structure and the new link road at Shannonpark are progressing well, with surfacing works now underway. Construction activities will also take place over the coming weekend, Saturday and Sunday, between 8am and 2pm. Traffic is expected to be transferred from the existing alignment onto the new section of the R611 in the coming weeks.

Looking Ahead

Works to connect the existing L2473 to a new roundabout are scheduled to begin within the next couple of weeks; further details will be provided in the next project newsletter. Night-time service crossings are planned on the R611 towards the end of April and into early May to minimise disruption to traffic. At Shanbally (Marion Terrace), road crossings by construction machinery will continue during working hours with stop/go controls in operation.

There will be no rock excavation by means of controlled blasting in the coming weeks; blasting is due to recommence in May.

N28 Traffic Management

The N28 between Rochestown and Carr's Hill has been reduced to one lane in each direction; road users are reminded to proceed with care. This single-lane arrangement will extend further north after the May Bank Holiday weekend. Flagmen remain in operation at the Mount Oval slip road to manage plant crossings, and traffic management measures including flagmen are in place along the R855 and R609 (Carrigaline Road) during working hours, subject to weather conditions.

On the R611 (Carrigaline Road), traffic has been realigned to accommodate works approaching the existing roundabout, with a full switch to the new section of the R611 expected towards the end of May. Flagmen remain in place on Ballinrea Road, with additional traffic management along the R611 verge. Three nights of night-time service crossings on the R611 are scheduled towards the end of April. The Rochestown off-ramp lane closure currently in place will temporarily extend onto Rochestown Road next week.

Ringaskiddy Relief Road

On the Ringaskiddy Relief Road mainline, construction of CCTV column and ITS gantry foundations is continuing at four locations. Finishing works are ongoing throughout the scheme, and the commissioning of the public lighting is complete.

Final surfacing works have commenced at Barnahely Roundabout and are due to be completed over the next week, to be followed by line marking and installation of road studs. Kerbing and footpath works are ongoing at the northern end of Barnahely, around the Johnson & Johnson entrance and at the bus stops.

The M28 Project Team has thanked all road users for their continued patience and cooperation.
