M28 Cork to Ringaskiddy: Works Advancing Across Multiple Locations
M28 works update: progress at Rochestown, Carr's Hill & Shannonpark with traffic management in place.
Major progress is being made along the M28 Cork to Ringaskiddy route, with construction activity ramping up at several key locations as the project moves into its next phase.
The latest update, issued on Friday 20th February, confirms that works are advancing simultaneously at Rochestown, Carr's Hill, and Shannonpark, while the Ringaskiddy Relief Road at Loughbeg is also nearing key milestones.
At Rochestown, construction of retaining walls near the N28 off-ramp is continuing alongside road widening works at the Bloomfield junction. Extraction of temporary sheet piles in this section is scheduled for the week commencing 2nd March.
At Carr's Hill, excavation and filling operations along the westbound verge have recommenced and are expected to continue for the next couple of months. Site clearance work is also ongoing, including gorse removal along both sides of the N28 verges. Separately, excavation for the new Maryborough to Carr's Hill link road is underway, with construction of a retaining wall due to commence shortly.
Shannonpark is seeing significant structural progress, with construction of the overbridge advancing and work on the north abutment ongoing. The south abutment is due to start next week, alongside construction of the new link road between the existing and proposed western roundabouts.

Traffic Management
Motorists should be aware of a number of traffic management measures currently in place. On the Rochestown off-ramp from the existing N28, a lane closure is in effect, with one lane remaining open for the next couple of weeks to support retaining wall construction.
The hard shoulder on the southbound N28 between Maryborough and Carr's Hill remains closed. At Carr's Hill, one of the two lanes beneath the underbridge will be closed shortly and will remain in place for several months to facilitate upcoming works.
Traffic management also continues on the R855 and R609 (Carrigaline Road), east of the N28, where flagmen are operating during working hours to manage plant crossings. These operations are weather-dependent due to active earthworks. Flagman-controlled plant crossings are also active on the Board of Works Road and on Ballinrea Road, with traffic management active along the verge of the R611.
Drivers should also be aware that possible daytime stop/go traffic management may be implemented on Maryborough Bridge for two days next week. There will be no rock excavation by controlled blasting in the coming weeks.
Ringaskiddy Relief Road
At Loughbeg, the main focus of works remains the Loughbeg Roundabout and Ringport Business Park area. The new access road into Ringport has now been opened to traffic. Pavement works have been taking place at the western and northern approaches to the roundabout, with utility, landscaping, and footpath works also progressing.
On the mainline, street lighting and crash barrier works are nearing completion, while planting and landscaping works are approximately 90% complete. At Barnahely Roundabout, footway and cycleway works are progressing northwards towards Ringaskiddy, with further sections of the path due to be surfaced and opened to pedestrians and cyclists in the coming days.
