M28 Cork to Ringaskiddy Update: N28 Closure and Bridge Demolition Set for October Bank Holiday Weekend
N28 closed between Rochestown and Carrs Hill from 8pm Friday 23 October to 5am Tuesday 27 October.
The N28 between Rochestown and Carrs Hill will be closed over the October Bank Holiday weekend, with demolition of the existing Maryborough Hill bridge also planned for the same weekend. The latest M28 Cork to Ringaskiddy progress update, dated 16 October 2026, also confirms the temporary bridge will open to traffic on Monday 19 October.
The N28 closure between Rochestown and Carrs Hill runs from 8pm on Friday 23 October until 5am on Tuesday 27 October. Demolition of the existing Maryborough Hill bridge is planned to take place over the October Bank Holiday weekend, from 23 to 27 October 2026.
Before then, tie-in surfacing works for the temporary access road at Maryborough Hill are scheduled for Monday 19 October. The temporary bridge will open to traffic that day, which the project team describes as a major milestone. Localised traffic management will be required on 19 October.
The temporary bridge will then be closed to vehicular traffic from midnight on Friday 23 October until 6pm on Saturday 24 October, as a safety precaution during demolition of the existing bridge deck. Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout this period.
The Maryborough to Carr’s Hill link road is nearing completion and is scheduled to open to traffic on 27 October 2026. From that date, a new road layout will be introduced at Carr’s Hill, with traffic directed onto newly completed sections of roadway. Motorists are asked to follow signage and proceed with caution.

Elsewhere on the scheme, retaining wall construction along the Rochestown off-ramp is ongoing. The foundation for the new bridge structure south of Rochestown Road is complete, with column reinforcement visible on site. Median works on the N28 between Bloomfield and Rochestown will take place over the October Bank Holiday weekend.
At Rochestown Road, the south-side footpath remains closed, and pedestrians are advised to use the footpath on the north side. The Rochestown off-ramp continues to operate with a single lane. At Mount Oval, excavation works for the new slip road continue, with flagmen managing plant crossings.
Further along the route, the bridge deck pour at Shannonpark is planned for early November, while wing wall installation at Board of Works Road is scheduled for early November. At Rock Road, the bridge beams are now in place, and temporary traffic lights remain while the existing road is lowered to its new alignment. Construction of the new structure at Shanbally (Marion Terrace) is now underway.
Rock excavation by means of controlled blasting has recommenced in an area of cutting to the north of the Shannonpark Roundabout. On the R855 and R609 (Carrigaline Road), flagmen are managing plant crossings during working hours. Flagmen also remain in operation on Ballinrea Road and sections of the R611, with intermittent flagmen and traffic lights at Cogan’s Road to facilitate machinery crossings.
Road users may notice green embankments across the site. This is the result of hydroseeding, where grass seed is applied with a coloured mulch to encourage growth and protect exposed soil.
