M28 Cork to Ringaskiddy: Night Works and Diversions Planned Across Project Corridor

Construction on the M28 Cork to Ringaskiddy scheme continues across the project corridor, with night works, service diversions and updated traffic management planned at several points along the route over the coming weeks. In its latest progress update, issued 18 September 2026, the M28 Project Team outlined works at locations including Rochestown, Mount Oval, Maryborough Hill and Shannonpark.

In Rochestown, work on the retaining wall beside the Rochestown off-ramp remains ongoing. Excavation for the new bridge foundations on the south side of Rochestown Road has begun, with overnight service diversion works scheduled for the week beginning 28 September before foundation construction can progress further.

Night works will also be required on the N28 in the coming weeks to modify the existing traffic management layout. These will include the removal of concrete traffic islands and adjustments to street lighting, and will take place between 8pm and midnight.

At Mount Oval, excavation for the new slip road continues. At Maryborough Hill, construction of the temporary access road to the recently installed temporary bridge is now underway, with service diversion works planned for the week beginning 28 September requiring localised daytime traffic management. Local traffic management will also be needed over the coming weeks while surfacing works are completed on the temporary bridge approaches.

Surfacing works are progressing well along the Maryborough to Carr's Hill link road, with the installation of safety barriers and topsoiling of verges to follow. On the Board of Works Road, kerbing works are due to begin the week beginning 21 September, to be followed by surfacing operations.

In Shannonpark, a further bridge milestone is approaching with the delivery of precast concrete beams for the next structure. Because of the oversized nature of the load, the beams will be transported to site under escort during night-time hours. Construction also continues at Rock Road, where beam installation is scheduled for the week beginning 21 September.

Elsewhere, machinery crossings continue intermittently at Cogan's Road during working hours. At Shanbally (Marion Terrace), construction traffic continues to use the road crossing, while foundation works for the new overbridge are now underway.

Traffic management

Traffic management remains in place across a number of locations to facilitate the ongoing works safely.

The footpath on the south side of Rochestown Road will remain closed for the next number of weeks to facilitate foundation works, and pedestrians are asked to use the footpath on the north side of the road. Daytime traffic management also remains in place on the N28 on-ramp.

Additional night-time traffic management will be required at Rochestown Bridge (N28) in the coming weeks to facilitate the changes to the traffic management layout, including the removal of concrete islands and adjustments to street lighting. The Rochestown off-ramp remains reduced to a single lane.

At Mount Oval, flagmen continue to manage plant crossings associated with the slip road works. Localised traffic management will also be in place at Maryborough Hill during the week beginning 28 September to facilitate the service diversion works.

Traffic management remains in operation on the R855 and R609 (Carrigaline Road), where flagmen are managing plant crossings and surfacing activities during working hours. Road users are asked to proceed with caution through these areas, with similar arrangements in place on Ballinrea Road and along the R611 corridor.

At Rock Road, localised traffic management will be required when the road reopens following the beam installation works. Intermittent flagmen or temporary traffic lights will continue to operate at Cogan's Road, while stop/go traffic management remains in place at Shanbally (Marion Terrace) during working hours as required. Rock excavation by means of controlled blasting has recommenced in an area of cutting north of the Shannonpark Roundabout.
