M28 Cork to Ringaskiddy Motorway Works Resume After Christmas Break

Construction on the M28 Cork to Ringaskiddy motorway project has resumed following the Christmas break, with contractor BAM remobilising on site from 5th January. Multiple work fronts are now active across the scheme, including major earthworks, retaining wall construction, and progress on the Ringaskiddy Relief Road.

In the Rochestown area, construction of a new retaining wall on the west side of the Bloomfield Interchange off-ramp is currently underway. This work will require a lane closure on the Rochestown off-ramp from the existing N28 from next week, with one lane remaining open for several weeks.

Excavation works for the new Maryborough to Carr's Hill link road have now commenced, with construction of a retaining wall to facilitate the link road due to begin shortly. Earthworks at the Carr's Hill Interchange are also underway, with major filling operations in the Ballybrack Valley expected to continue over the coming months.

At Shannonpark, earthworks are ongoing along the western edge of the Carrigaline Road. Construction of the north abutment for the bridge at Shannonpark Interchange is expected to begin in the new year. Culvert works are progressing throughout the scheme, with construction of a new culvert near Mount Oval now underway.

Several traffic management measures are in place to support these works. A temporary speed limit reduction between Rochestown Bridge and Carr's Hill remains active, with motorists asked to drive with care through this section.

Traffic management has been implemented on the R609 Carrigaline Road, east of the N28, with flagmen operating during working hours to safely manage plant crossings. The southbound hard shoulder on the N28 between Maryborough and Carr's Hill is currently closed and will remain in place until the end of January 2026.

From next week, flagmen will be introduced on Ballinrea Road to manage plant crossings. Looking ahead, one lane beneath the Carr's Hill underbridge will be closed from late January and will remain in place for several months to facilitate ongoing works.

Intermittent flagman-controlled plant crossings remain in place on Board of Works Road, subject to weather conditions.

There will be no rock excavation by means of controlled blasting in January 2026.

On the Ringaskiddy Relief Road, works are currently focused on the Loughbeg Roundabout and the new entrance to Ringport Business Park. Installation of kerbs and pavements on the new Ringport Access Road will commence over the coming days.

Along the mainline, installation of crash barriers and noise barriers is nearing completion. Street lighting works are continuing, with the majority of lighting columns now in place. Planting and landscaping works are scheduled to begin in the coming weeks.

The Barnahely Roundabout is now open to two-way traffic, marking another milestone for the project. Works are continuing on the footway and cycleway in front of the Eir exchange building and the graveyard, with works also due to commence near the Janssen entrance in the coming weeks.

The M28 Project Team has acknowledged and thanked all road users for their continued patience and cooperation during these works.
