M28 Cork to Ringaskiddy: Latest Construction Update

Single-lane N28 between Carr's Hill and Rochestown to extend further north after the May bank holiday weekend.

M28 Cork to Ringaskiddy: Latest Construction Update

Works on the M28 Cork to Ringaskiddy scheme continue to advance across multiple locations, with the project team issuing its progress newsletter for 1st May 2026.

In the Rochestown area, construction of retaining walls adjacent to the N28 off-ramp is ongoing, alongside road-widening works extending from the Bloomfield junction. Construction of a further retaining wall on the right-hand side of the off-ramp is scheduled to begin next week.

At the Mount Oval off-ramp, excavation for the new slip road is continuing as planned. Advance works are also due to begin shortly at Maryborough Hill, including service diversions and the removal of selected boundary walls in preparation for future construction activities.

Along the Maryborough to Carr's Hill link road, retaining wall construction is progressing on both the west and east sides of the N28, with these works expected to continue for several months. On the Board of Works Road, excavation and construction of the new bridge have commenced and will also continue over the coming months.

At Shannonpark, construction of the structure and new link road is advancing, with initial surfacing works now completed. Traffic lanes in the area have been temporarily reconfigured to allow completion of the south abutment, and this arrangement will remain in place for a few weeks before traffic is transferred onto the new section of road.

Looking ahead, works to connect the existing L2473 (Ballinrea Road) to the new roundabout are expected to start within the next couple of weeks. Along the R611, night-time service crossings are planned for 13th and 14th May to minimise disruption. At Shanbally (Marion Terrace), road crossings are currently in use by construction machinery during working hours, with excavation works for the overbridge due to commence shortly.

Traffic Management

A number of traffic management measures are currently in place across the scheme. On the Rochestown off-ramp, arrangements will be adjusted next week to accommodate retaining wall construction and will remain in place for several weeks.

The N28 between Carr's Hill and Rochestown continues to operate with one lane in each direction. Road users are advised to exercise caution, as this single-lane arrangement will extend further north after the May bank holiday weekend.

Traffic management is also active on the R855 and R609 (Carrigaline Road), both east and west of the N28, with flagmen or temporary traffic lights in operation during working hours, subject to weather conditions.

On Maryborough Hill near the bridge, stop/go controls and temporary traffic lights will be implemented over the next couple of weeks to facilitate service diversion works. Flagmen remain in operation on Ballinrea Road, with additional traffic management along the R611 verge.

On the R611 (Cork Road), traffic lane realignments are currently in effect, and motorists are asked to follow signage carefully. Night-time service crossings on the R611 are planned for 13th and 14th May.

There will be no rock excavation by controlled blasting this week. Blasting is due to recommence within the next two weeks.

Ringaskiddy Relief Road

Road surfacing works are ongoing at Loughbeg Road and Roundabout and on the mainline. The final surface course is due to be installed over the coming two to three weeks, followed by line marking and road studs throughout the scheme.

At Barnahely Roundabout, final surfacing works and line marking have been completed. Works are continuing on the kerbing and footpaths at the Johnson and Johnson entrance, with construction of the realigned boundary wall having commenced this week.

ESB are currently on site installing the power supply to the new ITS, CCTV and bus stop sites. Foundations for the CCTV poles and ITS gantries were poured in the past week.
