M28 Cork to Ringaskiddy: Construction Progress Update for 6 February 2026

Major construction works on the M28 Cork to Ringaskiddy motorway project are advancing across multiple locations, with new excavation works underway, structural progress at Shannonpark, and a number of traffic management measures in place for motorists.

Works are continuing at several key points along the route. In the Rochestown area, construction of the retaining walls near the N28 off-ramp remains ongoing, with progress reported as steady.

At Carr's Hill, excavation and filling operations along the westbound verge are scheduled to recommence next week and will continue over the coming months. Excavation works for the new Maryborough to Carr's Hill link road have now begun, and construction of a retaining wall in the area is due to start shortly.

Further south at Shannonpark, drainage works are now underway as part of the broader infrastructure programme. Work on the north abutment of the structure at Shannonpark has also commenced, marking another significant step in the structural works for this section of the project. Drainage and service ducting works have also begun along the R611 northbound verge, south of Shannonpark, and will continue for the coming weeks.

Traffic management measures

A number of traffic management measures remain in place to safely facilitate the ongoing works. On the Rochestown off-ramp from the existing N28, a lane closure is currently in effect, with one lane remaining open for the next couple of weeks to allow for the continued construction of the new retaining wall. Along the southbound N28 between Maryborough and Carr's Hill, the hard shoulder remains closed.

At Carr's Hill, one of the two lanes beneath the underbridge will be closed shortly and will remain closed for several months to support upcoming works in the area. Traffic management has also been implemented on the R609 (Carrigaline Road), east of the N28, where flagmen are in operation during working hours to manage plant crossings. These operations are weather-dependent due to ongoing earthworks.

Intermittent flagman-controlled plant crossings are also active on the Board of Works Road during working hours, subject to weather conditions. On Ballinrea Road, flagmen remain in place for plant crossings, and traffic management is in effect along the verge of the R611. Night works are scheduled next week for one night to facilitate a drainage road crossing, during which traffic will be managed by a stop/go system.

There will be no rock excavation by means of controlled blasting in the coming weeks.

Ringaskiddy Relief Road update

Separately, progress continues on the Ringaskiddy Relief Road. At Loughbeg, the new access road at Ringport Business Park is now open to traffic, facilitating the completion of the Loughbeg Roundabout. Surfacing work on the Loughbeg Road and Roundabout is continuing.

On the mainline, the noise barrier installation is now complete, with street lighting and crash barrier works nearing completion. Planting and landscaping works are ongoing and are expected to finish within the next fortnight.

At Barnahely Roundabout, the footway and cycleway has been surfaced and is partially open, with remaining works ongoing. Works on bus stops near the Janssen entrance are due to commence in the coming weeks.

The M28 Project Team has thanked all road users for their continued patience and cooperation during these works.
