Lord Mayor Switches On Christmas Lights at Cork Airport as Festive Travel Season Begins
Lord Mayor switches on Christmas lights at Cork Airport as busiest December begins with 217,000 passengers expected through festive season.
Cork Airport welcomed the festive season today as Lord Mayor Cllr. Fergal Dennehy officially switched on the Christmas lights, marking the start of what will be the busiest December in the airport's 64-year history.
Over 217,000 passengers are expected to pass through Cork Airport this December, bringing the total for 2025 to 3.4 million travellers, a 13% increase on 2024.
The lighting ceremony this morning featured pupils from Scoil an Spioraid Naoimh in Bishopstown, who were the first of over 1,200 performers scheduled to take to the airport's special Christmas stage between now and 23 December. The festive entertainment programme will showcase primary and secondary school children from across Cork city and county, alongside local orchestral ensembles, traditional music groups, choral societies and community choirs.
Cork Airport has once again transformed its terminal building for the Christmas period, with decorations installed throughout by the airport's asset care team. The airport is also participating in Cork City Council's "Corkmas" activities, with special giveaways for arriving passengers between 19 and 22 December in partnership with Cork's RedFM.
Cllr. Fergal Dennehy, Lord Mayor of Cork, said:
"Christmas at Cork Airport is such a special time. As families reunite with loved ones ahead of the festive season, it was an honour to switch on the Christmas lights at the airport today. I'm especially pleased that Cork City Council will be working with Cork Airport as part of our Corkmas activities, which will add a very welcoming touch for those travelling home to Cork this December."
Niall MacCarthy, Managing Director at Cork Airport, added:
"Christmas is really our favourite time of the year where we get a chance to interact more personally with our passengers, as they travel in and out for the festive season. The warmth and joy of the choirs make Cork Airport a really special place to travel through and work in at this time of year. Thanks to all the kids, adults and community groups for taking part."
The busiest travel period is expected to be between 18 and 22 December, with families travelling home for Christmas.
Passengers travelling this December are advised to arrive at Cork Airport at least 90 minutes before their flight departs, particularly if checking in baggage. Those travelling with gifts are advised not to wrap them, as they may be subject to inspection by security personnel. Christmas crackers are not permitted on board aircraft.
