Lord Mayor marks completion of Mahon Street Renewal Scheme
Cork's first community-wide street renewal scheme in Mahon complete, delivering safer streets and upgraded walking and cycling links.
Cork's first community-wide street renewal scheme has been completed, with Lord Mayor Cllr. Fergal Dennehy visiting Mahon on Thursday to mark the milestone.
The Mahon Street Renewal Scheme, delivered by Cork City Council and contractors McGinty & O'Shea, spans 5.6 kilometres and includes approximately 5.3 kilometres of cycling infrastructure, new and upgraded pedestrian crossings, 12 new bus stops with shelters, and greenway connections.
The €12 million project, funded by the National Transport Authority, extends along Ringmahon Road, Skehard Road, Avenue de Rennes, Ballinure Avenue, The Maples and Castle Road. It also includes a quiet-way from Castle Park to Ashwood via Loughmahon Park along Lakeland Crescent and Mahon Drive, with links to the Blackrock-Passage Greenway via Sean Cronin Park and the Lower Harbour Greenway.
Construction began in January 2024, with planned completion in mid-2025. The scheme aims to provide improved streets which are safer and offer multi-modal connected links to schools, shops, sports and leisure facilities within the Mahon area.
The works were completed in phases to limit the impact of construction on the community in any particular area. Features include renewed footpaths, new kerbing, ducting, public lighting and upgraded pedestrian crossing facilities, with ornamental landscaping provided at several locations. Tree planting commenced in November 2024.
Cork City Council has described the scheme as Cork's first community-wide streetscape renewal programme aimed at providing safer and healthier streets with better pedestrian and cycle links to schools, shops, sports and leisure facilities.
The completed infrastructure, which includes segregated cycle tracks and greenways, is designed to enhance the attractiveness of the streets whilst making them safer and more convenient for Mahon residents, school children, commuters and people doing business in the area.
