Lidl Gets Green Light for €200 Million Distribution Centre at Little Island
Lidl Ireland secures planning approval for a €200m distribution centre at Little Island, Cork, backing 22 local stores and reinforcing its major investment in the Munster economy.
Cork City Council has granted planning approval for a major new Lidl Ireland Regional Distribution Centre in Wallingstown, Little Island, representing a €200 million investment in the region's logistics infrastructure.
The facility, anticipated to come on stream by 2030, will be Lidl's fourth distribution centre in the Republic of Ireland and its second in Cork, joining the existing hub in Charleville which has operated since 2005.
The new centre forms part of a broader €600 million investment programme announced by Lidl last year, which includes the development of 35 new stores nationwide by 2030. The Little Island facility is specifically designed to strengthen Lidl's growing presence across Munster and the southeast.
Lidl currently supplies its 190 stores across Ireland from three regional hubs in Charleville, Mullingar, and Newbridge. The retailer operates 52 stores throughout Munster, including 22 in Cork alone, employing more than 700 people across the county.
Tara O'Connor, Regional Managing Director for Munster at Lidl Ireland, said:
"We are pleased to receive planning approval for a new, state-of-the-art Regional Distribution Centre at Little Island. This is an important milestone and reflects our continued commitment to investing in the Munster and Western region."
She added that since submitting the planning application in October 2024, Lidl has opened four additional stores in the region, at Moycullen, Killorglin, Limerick, and Claregalway, with further locations in the pipeline.
Lidl, which retail analysts Kantar identify as Ireland's fastest growing retailer, first opened in Cork in 2000. The company currently supports more than 120 Cork-based producers, procuring over €128 million worth of goods and services in 2024.
