A learner permit driver has had their vehicle seized after being caught travelling at 132km/h in an 80km/h zone in Cork city this weekend, Gardaí have confirmed.

Members of the Cork City Roads Policing Unit detected the vehicle travelling 52km/h over the posted speed limit. When officers stopped the car, the situation went from bad to worse.

The driver was found to be unaccompanied by a qualified driver, a legal requirement for all learner permit holders, and was also detected undertaking. The vehicle was seized and the driver was issued with fixed charge notices.

An Garda Síochána Cork reminded road users that a learner permit is a permit to learn, not a licence to drive unaccompanied at speed. Speed limits are in place to protect all road users, including the driver, passengers, and everyone else sharing the road.
