Land Development Agency Granted Planning Permission for 345 Affordable Homes in Wilton

The Land Development Agency has secured planning permission to develop 345 new affordable homes on former ESB lands in Wilton, Cork city, with construction targeted to begin in 2027 and first completions expected in 2029.

The 2.61-hectare site on Sarsfield Road, located just over 4km from Cork city centre, will feature a mix of 16 townhouses and 329 apartments across three blocks ranging up to six storeys in height. The development will include one, two and three-bed units, offering a combination of Affordable Purchase, Cost Rental and Social homes.

The project includes a crèche, outdoor play areas and landscaped open spaces with podium gardens. New pedestrian and cycle links will connect the development to Cardinal Court and Sarsfield Road, with 148 car parking spaces and 503 bike spaces provided for residents.

The location offers convenient access to Wilton Shopping Centre, Cork University Hospital, Munster Technological University, University College Cork, and various schools, shops and local services.

John Coleman, Chief Executive of the Land Development Agency, said:

"We are delighted to have reached this important milestone for the Wilton project and in our wider delivery of much-needed affordable housing in the heart of Cork City. Wilton is a fantastic site with great potential that we will now be able to realise. Our vision is to turn this underutilised site into high-quality affordable homes, which will enhance an already active local community and create positive societal impact for Cork City."

The project will go to tender in the coming weeks, with construction expected to commence in 2027 and the first homes delivered in 2029.

This development represents the latest progress in the LDA's Cork portfolio. The Agency is set to deliver the first of 267 homes at the former St. Kevin's Hospital site in Shanakiel early next year and will shortly lodge a planning application for 147 homes at Anglesea Terrace.

The LDA is also active in the Cork Docklands, developing 302 apartments at Horgan's Quay in partnership with HQ Developments Residential Company Ltd and a further 337 apartments with Glenveagh Properties at Marina Depot.

The Land Development Agency, Ireland's State affordable housing delivery body, has a pipeline exceeding 24,000 homes across various developments and partnership channels nationwide.
