Kanturk Area Connected to High Speed Fibre Broadband

Over 4,000 homes and businesses in the Kanturk area can now access high-speed fibre broadband, National Broadband Ireland (NBI) has confirmed.

NBI, which is delivering the Fibre-to-the-Home network under the National Broadband Plan (NBP) on behalf of the Government, said the connection of the Kanturk area means 4,148 premises can now access the service. This includes the rural surrounds and townlands of Kanturk, Greenane and Castlemagner.

The completion of works near Kanturk brings the total number of Cork premises that can now pre-order or order high-speed broadband to 75,506, with 22,101 connections made to date. Works have already been completed in much of rural Cork, including Grenagh and Charleville.

NBI is encouraging Cork residents to visit nbi.ie and check their Eircode to find out if they are ready to connect.

The Intervention Area, which covers the most remote and rural parts of Ireland where commercial operators have no plans to deliver high-speed broadband, currently includes 83,000 premises in Cork. NBI will deliver minimum speeds of 500 megabits per second to homes, businesses, farms and schools across the county as part of the rollout. Cork will receive €314 million in Government investment under the NBP, described as the biggest investment in rural Ireland since rural electrification.

With the national switch-off of the copper network approaching, NBI's fibre network will ensure communities across Ireland are prepared for the future by supporting remote working, education, healthcare access, and local enterprise while providing the reliability needed for everyday living.

As we enter the final phase of the National Broadband Plan rollout, we're encouraging everyone in County Cork to check their Eircode on nbi.ie and order now to secure high-speed fibre broadband for their home or business."

Nationally, NBI has passed over 504,000 homes, farms and businesses with high-speed broadband infrastructure, of which over 183,000 are now connected, an average take-up rate of 36 per cent. The main rollout is due to be concluded by the end of this year. More than 50 Retail Service Providers currently operate on the NBI network, with 955 Broadband Connection Points located across the country, including schools, sports clubs, community centres and tourist sites.
