Jack Lynch Tunnel Southbound Closures Begin Tomorrow Night

Motorists planning to use the Jack Lynch Tunnel southbound this week should prepare for overnight closures, with maintenance work scheduled for three consecutive nights starting tomorrow, Tuesday 29 July.

The southbound bore of the tunnel will be closed from 21:00 to 04:00 on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights (29-31 July). During these closures, southbound traffic will need to use alternative routes through Cork city or via the N40 South Ring Road.

The closures are part of ongoing maintenance works that will continue throughout August. Additional southbound closures are scheduled for 4-7 August and 12-14 August, following the same overnight pattern from 21:00 to 04:00.

Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) has also scheduled closures at the end of August that will include contraflow operations. On 29 and 30 August, while the southbound bore is closed, northbound traffic will operate under contraflow conditions, allowing two-way traffic through the northbound tunnel.

Motorists travelling during these times are advised to allow extra journey time and consider alternative routes. The Dunkettle Interchange and South Ring Road provide alternatives for those travelling between the northside and southside of Cork during closure periods.

The overnight timing of the works aims to minimise disruption to daytime traffic, though late-night travellers and shift workers should plan accordingly. Emergency services and local businesses operating during night hours should be particularly aware of these closures.
