An Garda Síochána has confirmed the arrest of an Irish national in the United Arab Emirates following the issue of a warrant by the Irish Courts in connection with alleged serious organised crime offences.

The male, described as being in his late 40s, was detained in Dubai on 15 April, according to a statement from Dubai Police. Specialised teams launched what the force described as intensive search and surveillance operations, and the suspect was captured within 48 hours of Dubai Public Prosecution issuing a local arrest warrant on foot of a judicial file received from Irish authorities.

Extradition proceedings are now under way in accordance with the bilateral agreement on extradition between Ireland and the United Arab Emirates.

An Garda Síochána said the force had been:

"Steadfast in our determination that we would pursue those allegedly involved in serious Organised Criminal activity, wherever they go," adding that the arrest was "another extremely important demonstration of the need for international law enforcement co-operation in tackling transnational organised crime."

Gardaí noted their relationship with UAE authorities, both at judicial level through the Ministry of Justice and on a police-to-police basis, had been supported by the Irish Government Department of Justice, Home Affairs and Migration, and the Department of Foreign Affairs.

Dubai Police confirmed the arrest came after receipt of a judicial file from Irish authorities detailing the suspect's alleged crimes and involvement in an international criminal organisation. The force reaffirmed its commitment to pursuing internationally wanted individuals and supporting global efforts to combat organised crime.

Gardaí confirmed the arrest "remains a matter for the authorities in the United Arab Emirates at this time."
