Irish Heritage Trust Opens Doors for Heritage Week with Free Events Across Historic Estates

Heritage Week celebrations are bringing unique opportunities to explore Ireland's historic estates, with the Irish Heritage Trust offering free special events at its properties including Cork's beloved Fota House & Gardens, alongside Johnstown Castle in Wexford and Strokestown Park in Roscommon.

Cork's Fota House & Gardens Unveils Hidden Histories

Fota House & Gardens is presenting an extensive programme that delves into both the estate's industrial heritage and natural wonders. The Belvelly Brickworks, a forgotten piece of Cork's industrial past, takes centre stage with two dedicated events: Exploring the Foundations of Belvelly Brickworks and Bringing the Light: Belvelly Brickworks, revealing how this local industry shaped the region's buildings and communities.

The estate's personal histories come alive through Lady Barrymore's Forgotten Daughter, which uncovers a touching story from the Barrymore family archives. Meanwhile, Foundations of our Collections provides behind-the-scenes access to the carefully preserved objects and stories housed at Fota.

Nature enthusiasts can explore The Victorian Lake and its Habitat, discovering the wildlife that thrives in this historic landscape, whilst A Tree from the Ground Up examines the ecological importance of trees. The renowned Fota Arboretum, home to one of Ireland's most significant tree collections, offers guided tours showcasing rare and exotic species from around the world.

Wexford's Johnstown Castle Reveals Wildlife Secrets

At Johnstown Castle Estate, Museum & Gardens, visitors can discover the property's hidden wildlife through Bats, Bees and Otter Things, an exploration of the nocturnal pollinators and riverbank dwellers that call the estate home. The programme highlights how biodiversity and heritage landscapes work hand in hand.

A special castle tour invites visitors inside the Gothic Revival mansion, where guides share stories of architectural splendour and the building's evolution through the centuries.

Roscommon's Strokestown Park Celebrates with Week-Long Festival

Strokestown Park and the National Famine Museum have planned a full week of activities. Families can enjoy a free scavenger hunt through the Walled Gardens, whilst Irish language enthusiasts can join Caife, Craic Agus Ceoil, an informal café session featuring traditional music and conversation suitable for all language levels.

Architecture buffs can explore the legacy of Richard Cassels through Palladian Power: Richard Cassels & Strokestown Park House. General Manager John O'Driscoll will lead his monthly garden tour, focusing on sustainable practices and biodiversity initiatives.

Children aged 5 to 12 can participate in Movement in Nature, a mindful movement workshop led by psychologist and ecotherapist Marianne Fallon. The week concludes with A Day of Automotive History, partnering with the Roscommon Sports & Classic Cars Club to display vintage vehicles on the estate grounds.

All Heritage Week events are free to attend, though booking is advised and donations are welcome. Full programme details and booking information are available at https://irishheritagetrust.ie.
