Transport Minister Darragh O'Brien has announced the completion of the Regional and Local EV Charging Network Plan following public consultation. This finalisation marks the second part of Ireland's comprehensive National EV Charging Network Plan, with the National Road component having been published in May 2024.

The new plan, developed by Zero Emission Vehicles Ireland (ZEVI), establishes targets and strategies for local authorities to develop electric vehicle infrastructure at destination and neighbourhood locations throughout Irish communities. It focuses on ensuring charging facilities are available where people need them most: at home, on the road, and at key locations across neighbourhoods.

"This plan will help deliver the charging infrastructure people need, where they need it:

" Minister O'Brien said at the launch. "Together with the National Road EV Charging Plan, it provides a complete national plan, ensuring no gaps in coverage and supporting Ireland's transition to cleaner transport."

The initiative aligns with both national and EU climate objectives, forming part of Ireland's strategy to reduce emissions and achieve a fully decarbonised transport sector by 2050. The plan outlines specific investment strategies, regulatory frameworks, and policy instruments to support these ambitions.

Minister of State Jerry Buttimer emphasised the plan's focus on equitable access to charging infrastructure:

"The plan aims to ensure there is sufficient infrastructure in rural and remote areas to meet future demand to promote widespread EV adoption," he stated.

The Regional and Local Plan builds on existing initiatives, including the Shared Island Sports Club EV Charging Scheme, the EU Just Transition Fund Community Facilities EV Charging Scheme, and the ZEVI TII EV Recharging Infrastructure Light Duty Vehicle National Road Grant Schemes.

The comprehensive approach aims to address potential gaps in charging infrastructure as Ireland continues its push towards sustainable transport solutions.
