Ireland and Brazil Open Negotiations on Historic Direct Flight Agreement

Ireland and Brazil have taken a significant step towards establishing direct flights between the two countries, with ministers from both governments announcing the formal opening of negotiations on an Air Services Agreement.

Minister for Transport Darragh O'Brien and Brazil's Minister for Ports and Airports, Silvio Costa Filho, made the announcement on 10 March 2026. The agreement, if concluded, would create the legal and regulatory framework needed for scheduled direct flights between Ireland and Brazil.

Currently, there are no direct flights from Ireland to anywhere in South America. A new direct route would not only connect Ireland to Brazil but could also offer onward connectivity to destinations across the wider continent via key international hubs such as São Paulo/Guarulhos International Airport.

While the agreement would pave the way for direct services, the decision to actually launch flights will remain a commercial matter for airlines. However, data indicates growing passenger demand for direct travel between the two countries, and a number of airlines have informally expressed interest in the route. It is hoped a carrier from Ireland, Brazil, or the European Union will step forward to meet that demand.

A bilateral air services agreement between Ireland and Brazil would send a strong signal to industry of the commitment our two Governments have to facilitating direct connectivity between our two countries which would realise significant benefits for tourism and trade and further develop the growing bonds between our people. I am optimistic about the pace of progress, and I look forward to both sides bringing the agreement to fruition in due course."

Silvio Costa Filho, Minister for Ports and Airports of Brazil:

"The bilateral air services agreement between Brazil and Ireland represents an opportunity not only to expand aviation links between the two countries, but also to boost tourism between Latin America and Europe. This is a very important milestone for both governments, which have demonstrated mutual interest in opening new markets and strengthening the mode of transport that carries the largest number of people worldwide on long-haul journeys. The Ministry of Ports and Airports and the Federal Government will make every effort to ensure that the agreement will be concluded soon, paving the way for air operations between the two nations."

As an international agreement, the Air Services Agreement will need to pass through the relevant domestic procedures in both countries before it can be signed and enter into force.

Irlanda e Brasil Iniciam Negociações sobre Histórico Acordo de Voos Diretos

A Irlanda e o Brasil deram um passo significativo rumo ao estabelecimento de voos diretos entre os dois países, com os ministros de ambos os governos anunciando a abertura formal de negociações sobre um Acordo de Serviços Aéreos.

O Ministro dos Transportes, Darragh O'Brien, e o Ministro dos Portos e Aeroportos do Brasil, Sílvio Costa Filho, fizeram o anúncio em 10 de março de 2026. O acordo, se concluído, criará o enquadramento legal e regulatório necessário para voos diretos regulares entre a Irlanda e o Brasil.

Atualmente, não existem voos diretos da Irlanda para nenhum destino na América do Sul. Uma nova rota direta não só ligaria a Irlanda ao Brasil, como poderia também oferecer conectividade para destinos em todo o continente, através de importantes centros internacionais como o Aeroporto Internacional de Guarulhos, em São Paulo.

Embora o acordo abra caminho para serviços diretos, a decisão de lançar os voos continuará a ser uma questão comercial para as companhias aéreas. No entanto, os dados indicam uma procura crescente de passageiros por viagens diretas entre os dois países, e várias companhias aéreas manifestaram informalmente interesse na rota. Espera-se que uma transportadora da Irlanda, do Brasil ou da União Europeia avance para responder a essa procura.

"O acordo bilateral de serviços aéreos entre o Brasil e a Irlanda é a oportunidade não apenas de expansão da aviação entre os países, mas de também alavancar o turismo na América Latina e Europa. Esse é um marco muito importante para os dois governos, que vêm demonstrando interesse mútuo em abrir novos mercados e fortalecer o modal que mais transporta pessoas no mundo em viagens de longa distância. No que depender do Ministério de Portos e Aeroportos e do Governo Federal, o acordo será celebrado em breve, abrindo caminhos para a operação aérea entre as nações."

Por ser um acordo internacional, o Acordo de Serviços Aéreos precisará passar pelos procedimentos internos de ambos os países antes de poder ser assinado e entrar em vigor.
