HSE South West Shares Winter Safety Tips to Help Older People Stay Well at Home

HSE South West has launched a winter health campaign to help older people in Cork and Kerry stay safe and well during the colder months, with practical advice on preventing falls, maintaining nutrition, and avoiding unnecessary hospital visits.

The campaign, announced on 10 December 2025, includes video guidance and expert tips from specialists at Cork University Hospital, University Hospital Kerry, and the Older Persons' Hubs across Cork and Kerry, addressing the specific challenges winter brings for older residents.

Dr. Mary Randles, Geriatric Emergency Multidisciplinary Service at University Hospital Kerry, said:

"Simple steps taken at home can make a significant difference in staying well this winter. Good nutrition, home safety, and vaccination are key to reducing risks and ensuring older people can remain safe and independent."

Dr. Randles added:

"One of the main ways you can prevent slips, trips and falls at home is making sure that your house remains free of clutter, so loose rugs, loose wires, pets – consider having a bell on a pet so you can hear them coming and you don't trip over them; and making sure you're wearing safe footwear."

She also recommended the "Take Control Reduce Your Risk of Falls" resource available on hse.ie.

Key Winter Safety Tips

HSE South West recommends older people maintain balanced meals including protein, dairy, and vitamin D to keep bones strong. Keeping a well-stocked pantry with long-life foods such as tinned fish and beans is advised, along with ensuring freezers contain essentials like bread and milk.

Services such as Meals on Wheels can deliver hot meals directly to homes, while pendant alarms and falls watches can alert services quickly in emergencies. The HSE also reminds people to fill prescriptions in advance to avoid running out of essential medication.

Winter vaccinations remain crucial, with HSE South West urging older people and those with underlying health conditions to stay up to date with flu and COVID-19 vaccines. Vaccination is one of the most effective ways to reduce the risk of serious illness and hospitalisation during colder months.

The campaign materials, including video advice on avoiding slips, trips and falls, are available through HSE channels, alongside practical tips from Catriona Rohan in the Older Person's Hub and Dr. Bart Daly, Consultant Geriatrician.
