High Pressure Takes Hold: Sunshine and Spring Warmth Coming to Cork This Week

Wednesday starts on a dull and damp note, with rain, drizzle and mist lingering through the morning. Visibility will be poor at times during the commute, so allow extra time on the roads. Conditions will gradually improve through the afternoon, with brighter spells developing and temperatures climbing to 11 to 14 degrees in light to moderate easterly winds.

From Thursday, high pressure takes firm control, nudging the pressure centre up to around 1,032 hPa and bringing a welcome stretch of settled, dry weather to Munster.

Thursday looks like the pick of the week. Widespread spring sunshine is expected, with temperatures reaching a very pleasant 12 to 18 degrees, warmest away from exposed coasts where an easterly breeze will keep things cooler. Overnight lows of 1 to 4 degrees are possible, with the risk of a touch of ground frost inland.

Foggy mornings become a recurring feature from Thursday night through to Saturday. Mist and fog will develop widely each night and persist into the early morning hours, reducing visibility on rural roads at dawn. Motorists should take particular care during these periods.

Friday continues the settled theme, with fog clearing to give spells of hazy sunshine. Temperatures again reach 12 to 17 degrees, warmest further inland, in just light easterly breezes.

Saturday remains largely bright and sunny once any morning fog lifts, though a northerly breeze picking up to 20 to 30 km/h will make it feel slightly cooler, with highs of 10 to 14 degrees. Cloud will begin to increase from the northwest by evening as the high pressure gradually weakens.

Sunday stays dry through daylight hours despite cloudier skies. Temperatures reach 10 to 14 degrees, with westerly winds freshening through the day. Outbreaks of rain and drizzle are expected to push in from the northwest during the evening as a frontal system approaches from the Atlantic, marking the end of the settled spell.

Looking further ahead, high pressure moves eastwards from Monday, with more unsettled conditions following as low pressure systems track in from the Atlantic. There is, however, a signal for more settled weather to return towards the end of next week.
