Healthcare Options Available Across Cork During St Brigid's Day Bank Holiday Weekend

HSE South West has issued guidance for Cork residents on where to access urgent healthcare during the upcoming St Brigid's Day Bank Holiday weekend, with Injury Units offering faster treatment for non-emergency cases.

Emergency Departments typically experience increased activity during bank holiday weekends, with the most seriously ill and injured patients prioritised. This often results in longer waiting times for less urgent cases, prompting health officials to encourage the public to consider alternative care options.

Injury Units across Cork provide consultant-led care including X-rays, fracture management, treatment for burns and wound care. These facilities can offer quicker access to assessment and treatment for minor injuries compared to Emergency Departments.

Carole Croke, Hospital Manager at Bantry General Hospital, said:

"In a real emergency, please go to the Emergency Department or call 999/112. For non-life-threatening injuries, Injury Units can often provide faster treatment. Units across Cork will be open this weekend, including Bantry Injury Unit from 8am to 8pm for patients aged five and above."

HSE South West recommends several non-emergency healthcare options. Self-care with a well-stocked medicine cabinet can help manage colds and sore throats, whilst pharmacists can provide advice on common minor illnesses. Patients should check routine prescriptions with their GP ahead of the bank holiday weekend.

For out-of-hours GP services when clinics are closed, SouthDoc is available on 0818 355 999. A full list of Injury Units is available at hse.ie/injuryunits.

Priscilla Lynch, HSE manager for Cork South and West, said:

"SouthDoc provides timely, convenient, and well-coordinated care for many non-emergency situations, offering an alternative to visiting the emergency department. By providing direct access to doctors and nurses, supporting continuity with your GP, and ensuring patient safety and confidentiality, SouthDoc helps keep the Emergency Department available for true emergencies while caring for the community at every step."
