Gurranabraher Water Mains Upgrade Complete Following 2.4km Replacement Project
Gurranabraher water mains upgrade complete: 2.4km of 1940s pipes replaced with modern infrastructure, improving water quality for northside community.
Uisce Éireann has completed the replacement of 2.4 kilometres of ageing water mains in Gurranabraher on Cork City's northside, addressing water quality issues and reducing leakage in the area.
The project saw old cast iron pipes dating from the 1940s replaced with modern infrastructure across the community, delivered by contractor Ward and Burke Construction Ltd.
Brian McCarthy, Programme Manager at Uisce Éireann, said:
"The section of water mains in Gurranabraher was prioritised for investment and replacement due to its age and deteriorating condition with the old cast iron mains dating back to the 1940s. The completed works are also an important part of Uisce Éireann's plan to address the water quality issues that some customers have been experiencing.
We were delighted to progress these critical upgrades for the local community, providing them with improved water quality, and a more secure and reliable water supply that will also reduce leakage and strengthen the water network in the city for generations to come. We would like to thank the community for their cooperation and patience while we completed the works."
The works took place across Barrett's Terrace, Gurranabraher Road, Friars Avenue, Boyce's Street, St. Anthony's Road, Glen Ryan Road, McSwiney's Villas, St. Theresa's Road, St. Anne's Road, Presentation Avenue, St. Vincent's Street, St. Brigid's Road, Gurranabraher Avenue, St. Rita's Avenue and St. Philomena's Road.
The project included laying new water service connections from the public water main to customers' property boundaries. Where existing service connections contained lead pipes, these were replaced.
The upgrade forms part of Uisce Éireann's national Leakage Reduction Programme, which aims to improve water quality, provide more resilient supply, and deliver significant water savings across Ireland.
