A member of the Cork Safety Alerts team has received an email from Groupon Customer Support saying their account password has been reset following a data breach at another company. Groupon states that there has been no data breach at Groupon.

The email says Groupon believes the account’s credentials may have been included in a recent release of email addresses and passwords. The company that was breached is not named in the email.

Groupon Customer Support said:

“To clarify, there has been no data breach at Groupon.”

The email explains that anyone who uses the same email address and password for Groupon as for other companies could be at risk. It says fraudsters who have obtained those details from another company could use them to log into a Groupon account.

Groupon Customer Support also said:

“As a precautionary measure, we’ve reset your password to help protect your account.”

To set a new password, the email directs customers to groupon.ie, where they should click “Sign in” and then select the “Forgot your password?” link. It adds that reusing passwords across multiple accounts significantly increases the risk of multiple accounts being compromised if just one is breached, and that each password should be unique.

Cork Safety Alerts has not independently verified the underlying breach. Readers who want to be sure can go directly to groupon.ie rather than using links in an email.
